Honorary Membership

Each chapter may select two persons each year for honorary membership. Students that do not meet the Phi Alpha criteria are not eligible for honorary membership. This recognition is available to persons outside the program who have made significant contribution to the program and/or society. Membership certificates for honorary members are provided by the National Office without cost to local chapters.

Student Support Membership

Designed for students eligible for Phi Alpha membership whose situation makes it a challenge to pay membership fees. Each chapter receives 2 memberships per academic year at no cost. Chapters are responsible for any chapter fees.

Social Work Faculty

Membership is available to all full-time social work faculty with a MSW from an accredited Social Work program

Phi Alpha will provide membership at no cost to chapter advisors.

Membership Qualifications

National Qualifications for Undergraduate Membership:

 

An undergraduate student is eligible for membership after achieving the following national requirements and meeting local chapter requirements:

 

  • Declared Social Work as a Major
  • Achieved Sophomore status
  • Completed 9 semester hours (12 quarter hours) of required social work courses
  • Achieved an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Achieved a 3.25 GPA in required social work courses

 

Please note that all memberships are obtained through your school's Phi Alpha Chapter. Local chapters may establish higher eligibility requirements. We are not able to accept individual memberships not tied to a chapter at this time. Thank you for your interest.

 

National Qualifications for Graduate/Doctoral Membership:

 

A graduate/doctoral student is eligible for membership after achieving the following national requirements and meeting local chapter requirements:

 

  • Completed on term of course work with the minimum number of social work credits as determined by local chapter
  • Achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 based on a 4.0 scale
